Considering Ethiopic Character ClassesDaniel Yacob - Ge'ez Frontier Foundation
The presentation will explore the character properties of the Ethiopic syllabary. The purpose of the paper is to provide developers information they will need for the text processing of Ethiopic script elements. The presentation will begin with a review of the original Ge'ez syllabary and its evolution and adaption by other languages with a perspective on how the various forms the syllabary takes impacts collation practices in the present day. The presentation will continue with a look at traditional character names and syllabic form names that can be applied in the construction of character entity names. Character numerology used in assessing Biblical relationships and in a fortune telling like practice will also be discussed. The presentation will conclude with an in depth look at linguistic properties of Ethiopian syllographs and how they impact the fields of pattern matching and text retrieval. Character classes modeled in the POSIX framework will be presented and a new regular expressions operator will be proposed. |
