"All modern platforms ship with correct locale data." Is this statement true or false? A first step is to decide what
"correct" means: a practical interpretation is: "the most widely
and internationally accepted current values". In any event, this
represents a daunting task facing platform owners, as they try to
deliver "correct" locale data to their end-users. This paper serves to illustrate the part the Common XML Locale
Repository (CXLR) project and LDML (Locale Data Markup Language)
have played in helping Sun face this task. It will also address the
future cooperation needed in order to facilitate a day when
platform vendors in general can answer "true" to the above
question, and the majority of end-users will agree with them! |
