Unicode Acceptance in the MarketplaceGentry Watson - G. Watson Internationalization Services
The paper identifies the different users of Unicode and identifies methods to increase acceptance of the specification. The different users for Unicode include: - Operating system vendors- Programming Language/Scripting Language specifications - System/Internet software vendors - Application software development organizations The first two categories of users have shown significant acceptance of Unicode. Reasons for this acceptance are identified and described. System/Internet software vendors also have accepted Unicode. The major reason for this may be the implicit support of Unicode in the programming and scripting languages used to implement the system/internet software. The final category, application software development organizations, has not accepted Unicode as aggressively as the others. Reasons for this lack of acceptance are identified along with approaches to promote increased use of Unicode. Participants in this presentation will have a better understanding of different categories of users of Unicode. They will also better understand the reasons that Unicode has/has not been accepted by these users. |
